PETRONAS Celebrates Sixth Championship Double with Lewis and Valtteri
PETRONAS celebrated the record-breaking sixth consecutive FIA Formula One World Championship double with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at the PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.
Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport secured the Constructors' Championship at the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix in mid-October.
Three weeks later, Lewis Hamilton claimed his sixth Drivers' title in the United States. This year's double championship success guarantees Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport a place in the F1 history books - never before in the 70-year-long history of the sport has a team been able to win six consecutive double world championships.
The partnership with PETRONAS has played a crucial role in the team's continued success, with PETRONAS high-tech solutions at the very heart of the car: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport used PETRONAS PRIMAX racing fuel to propel the championship-winning Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 to 15 wins this season, PETRONAS SYNTIUM motor oil served as the lifeblood of the car's engine.
The 2019 Formula One season also marked the tenth season of the highly successful partnership between PETRONAS and the team.
The team and its title partner can look back at an era of unparalleled success in the sport. Since 2010 they have started 198 races, claiming 103 pole positions and 93 victories.
Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas came to Kuala Lumpur to thank their colleagues at PETRONAS for the continued support that made these impressive achievements possible.
They were greeted with a warm welcome at the headquarters of the team's title partner - the PETRONAS Twin Towers.
Lewis Hamilton said: "We've been very fortunate to be able to come out to Kuala Lumpur quite a few times now over the last years to celebrate our joint success with everyone at PETRONAS - it shows you how strong this partnership is.
“There are so many people here who directly or indirectly contributed to it, so coming to the PETRONAS Twin Towers is a great opportunity for us to say thank you for all the hard work and all the dedication that has gone into this success behind the scenes.
“We're up against some formidable opponents who work very hard to beat us, so to finish the season on top is testament to the tremendous commitment of everyone. I'm really proud to be a part of this huge team and seeing our journey together. Thanks to every single member of the PETRONAS family for your great support."
Valtteri Bottas said: "We've had a great day here at PETRONAS. Our colleagues gave us a very warm, very energetic welcome and it's fantastic to see that they share our enthusiasm for racing.
“The team here works tirelessly to further improve the high-tech solutions they provide to our car and I have no doubt that together we will be able to raise the bar even further next year.
“Thank you very much to everyone at PETRONAS for the continuous support, for all the passion and dedication that goes into finding even more performance for our car. Let's keep pushing together."
PETRONAS President and Group CEO, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said winning six consecutive Constructors' Championships is an outstanding demonstration of shared success as title and technical partner of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport: "We embrace technology as a key differentiator in our business to provide PETRONAS with a competitive edge and to unlock opportunities.
“The successful partnership with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport is a demonstration of this aspiration where we continue to support the team with innovative offerings through our Fluid Technology Solutions.
“On behalf of PETRONAS, I would like to congratulate Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport for its achievements and we look forward to bringing greater value to the team as a progressive energy and solutions partner."
Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport, Toto Wolff, said: "PETRONAS have been our partner for a decade now, they've been by our side from day one.
“It's remarkable what we've achieved together in those ten years; we wrote Formula One history together: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport is the first team in F1 to win six consecutive double titles and we could not have done this without PETRONAS by our side.
“They keep pushing the boundaries and work hand in hand with our technical team to extract as much performance as possible from our package. It makes me very proud to see what we have achieved together in the past ten years and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us."
