Five Key Moments from Our Qatar GP Weekend

If anything sums up the topsy-turvy nature of our 2024 F1 season, it has been the past two race weekends.

Seven days separated the incredible highs of Las Vegas and the frustrating lows of Qatar, and after a weekend that promised much potential.

Despite a determined effort from both drivers to push to the very last lap, the team left the Lusail Sprint weekend with just 21 more points on this season's tally.

Here are the key moments that shaped our Qatar GP weekend, on and off the track.

Mr Saturday

"A good party, not a crazy one," was how George described his and the team's celebrations post-Vegas, and there were certainly no signs of fatigue when George and W15 hit the track on Friday.

A brilliant effort saw George reach the Sprint race front row for the second time in the past three events (after Austin) on Friday evening, perhaps fittingly just 63 hundredths off pole.

While the start on Saturday did not go as hoped, George did everything he could to overtake Oscar Piastri's McLaren for P2, and was comfortable in keeping the cars behind at bay.

A first Sprint podium since São Paulo 2022 was the reward, as the trio of Piastri, George and Land Norris completed a first-ever Sprint podium lockout for Mercedes-Benz Power in F1.

Hours later George would go one better than Friday and take pole for the Grand Prix after Max Verstappen's penalty - the fifth P1 start of his career and the first back-to-back for car number 63 in F1.

LH and the Local Community

On Thursday of Qatar, the team were delighted to welcome 20 students from the Qatar Foundation in to the F1 paddock.

The initiative is a non-profit organisation made up of 50 entities across education, research and community development in the country.

The students from Awsaj Academy, Qatar Academy for Science and Technology and the Ability Friendly Program got the chance to see behind the scenes of an F1 garage and ask seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton some questions.

Making our global sport more accessible to those in the local area is a key part of our diversity and inclusion efforts, which seek to make F1 an open sport for all.

Back in Time with IWC

In the heat of Qatar, there was no doubt our drivers looked cool. In conjunction with team partner IWC Schaffhausen, Lewis and George were kitted out in white race overalls for their weekend in the desert.

The suits were inspired by IWC's recent activation with Lewis, which saw 105-time Grand Prix winner swap the racetrack for the skies and follow one of his dreams to embark on the first step of astronaut training.

Both suits featured dedicated 'space mission' patches on the back with their respective numbers, 44 and 63.

George also ran a special edition helmet - turning his normal blue design white - again in-keeping with the aeronautical theme. It definitely stood out under the bright lights on track!

Desert Delight for Doriane

F1 Academy returned in Qatar after a two-month break and our junior driver Doriane Pin was in red-hot form in the desert.

Two poles from Qualifying were backed up with a commanding win in race one on Saturday, before race two on Sunday was unfortunately cancelled.

This was Doriane's third win of her debut single-seater season in the series, after triumphs in Jeddah and Zandvoort.

It leaves the 20-year-old Iron Dames racer in a strong position to confirm P2 in the standings at this weekend's season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Grand Slam Guest

The latest in a long line of sports crossovers in the paddock took place at the weekend, as we welcomed tennis legend Novak Djokovic into the team.

The Serb - who has won a record 24 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career - got a tour of our engineers office, as we gave the former world number one an all-inclusive behind-the-scenes tour.

New coach and former on-court rival Andy Murray wasn't too pleased to see the 37-year-old spending time away from training, though!
