Dutch GP: Solid Friday in Windy Zandvoort

Challenging, changeable weather conditions to start the weekend: George and Lewis finish Friday's practice in P1 and P3.

The summer break is over: Formula 1 is back!

At the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on Friday, F1 kicked off the first race weekend after the summer shutdown.

Dramatic changes in the weather meant by the time FP2 started the track was completely dry, which allowed Lewis and George to start the session on the Medium tyre compound in the sunshine.

However, the strong gusts of wind were still present in the afternoon and George went off the track once on his first run in Turn 1. There was a strong tailwind at that point. Even in the dry, the conditions remained difficult.

This became apparent about 18 minutes into FP2 when Nico Hülkenberg crashed his Haas at Turn 1, bringing out a red flag. However, the session was resumed shortly afterwards.

Lewis reported that the balance of his car generally felt good while George noted that he wasn't able to get everything out of the car because of a flat spot he suffered at Turn 1.

After the first runs on the Medium tyres, the Mercedes duo began work on the Soft tyres, followed by race preparations with long runs.

After the flat spot, George completed the long run on the Soft tyre set, while Lewis used the Medium tyre from the start of the session.

George finished the session fastest with a time of 1:10.702, with Lewis just a tenth behind in P3.

As usual, the times were very close on the short track at Zandvoort. The top five were within three tenths of a second of each other and all the drivers up to P14 were within a second of each other.

Wet and Windy FP1

At the start of FP1, very wet and windy conditions greeted the drivers and teams at the old school circuit on the North Sea coast.

The track dried out considerably as the session progressed, which allowed the drivers to switch from full wets to intermediates and later slicks.

Conditions were tricky throughout, but a dry line formed towards the end which allowed Lewis and George to put in a few laps on the Soft tyres.

In the final minutes, all 20 cars were out on track and the times tumbled by the second. In the end, Lewis and George finished third and fifth.

Our duo struggled with traffic on the final laps and were unable to set any quicker times. Given the conditions, the significance of the first practice session was limited.

The team will now analyse the collected data overnight and prepare for Saturday, when the forecast is for less windy but wet conditions.

Saturday starts with FP3 at 11:30 local time (10:30 BST), followed by qualifying at 15:00 local time (14:00 BST). Sunday's race starts at 15:00 local time (14:00 BST).

George Russell

It was good to get back in the car and into the swing of things with the first day of running here in Zandvoort. It was difficult out there due to the windy conditions. It is perhaps the windiest conditions I can remember driving an F1 car in over the past few years. Nevertheless, the car was performing really well and the updated floor we brought to Spa seemed to be working effectively.

The pack at the front seems to be quite close once again. We expect to be facing another fascinating battle across the rest of the weekend for the podium spots. That said, it could all be very different tomorrow as the conditions likely change once again. I’m excited to get back in the car tomorrow and see what we can do.

Lewis Hamilton

Today wasn’t a bad start to the weekend. Everything went well, the car was feeling alive, and we were near the front of the field on the timing screens. We understand our car and that is making starting each weekend on the front foot much easier. We can make small tweaks from there, rather than big changes, and that is making it much easier to find performance. That was the case today and sets us up well for the rest of the weekend.

There’s still more time to find out for sure. I didn’t get the most out of my lap on the Soft compound tyre so that’s encouraging for qualifying. We will go through the data on the long runs this evening and see if we can make further improvements overnight.

Andrew Shovlin, Trackside Engineering Director

Today was an encouraging start to the weekend. The conditions in FP1 were particularly tricky with very strong winds and heavy rain making it difficult to get a good read on the updated floor we brought to Spa. Nevertheless, what we saw looks in line with expectations, so we'll continue the weekend with that fitted to both cars.

Across both FP1 and FP2 the car has been working well. The single lap performance looks solid, although it's likely to be tight with Verstappen and the McLarens in qualifying as they all looked strong today. We have a few areas we can improve in that regard but no doubt the others are in a similar position. Our long runs weren’t quite as strong. We can certainly find a bit of pace with tyre management and an improved balance, but Norris looked very good this afternoon and we will need to take a step to get on his pace. We'll work hard overnight to find those gains; we've shown in recent races that, if we get the car in the right window, we can be competitive and on the basis of today, it looks like we will should be in the fight near the front tomorrow.
