Lewis and George Preview Singapore Grand Prix

Skyscrapers, scenery, and plenty of sweat! It could only be the Singapore Grand Prix.

The F1 paddock has arrived at the Marina Bay streets for what always proves to be one of the toughest tests for a driver on the calendar.

There have been plenty of challenges for the team of late, with Lewis and George still trying to recover the form that brought three winners’ trophies and three further pieces of silverware back to Brackley before the summer break.

While last week’s P3 was not achieved on pure pace, there were signs that things were coming together in Baku.

“We were competitive in the second stint last week,” said George.

“It is so competitive at the front and a tenth or two can be the difference between a front row start and P6 or P7 on the grid.”

Lewis too has felt the rollercoaster of emotions with W15 this season in a tightly packed battle at the front of the grid.

“Some weekends we arrive and think we are going to be better than we are and then we think we are not going to be there and we end up winning a race,” said the seven-time world champion.

“It is like playing golf! It can be frustrating, but you still love it.

“You keep pushing because you are looking for that feeling, like we had at Silverstone and Spa.”

For the second year in a row the Marina Bay circuit has had some changes, with a fourth DRS zone added to help improve racing on a layout where overtaking can prove difficult.

“I hope racing will be better, and maybe overtaking will be possible,” said George.

“It will still be down to Qualifying, you will still need a good result there to set you up for the race.”

Lewis added: “I hope it makes a difference. It is hard to overtake here, you need 1.5 second advantage on the car ahead to have a chance of getting by.

“Whatever it takes to make racing better they should do, it is what all the drivers want to see.”

Something that the F1 world certainly did enjoy seeing was the strong performances of Franco Colapinto and Ollie Bearman in Azerbaijan last week – both points scorers in just their second races.

Lewis – who posted about the pair on social media in the week and is set to make his 350th Grand Prix start this weekend – said: “They are both really talented guys, with a bright future ahead of them.

“When I started in F1 I did not get that warm welcome – it only came from Niki. I want to make sure I am positive towards them and lift them up.”

Seven races remain in 2024, and though the momentum of the summer break has dropped, the motivation among the team remains as high as ever.

Lewis said: “We all care so much, and everyone is working so, so hard. We are in the period of the season when we just have to give everything.

“If it does not go well, we won’t let it get us down.”
