Hungarian GP Recap: Podium Streak Continues as Milestones Reached

Toto said the aim going into Hungary was to keep the momentum of the triple-header going.

One podium from a P5 start,a strong recovery drive with a fastest lap to boot, and we head to Spa for the final race before the summer break confident of another strong showing.

Here's everything we learned from the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Two Centuries Not Out for LH

Lewis Hamilton is back breaking milestones.

In Hungary, he reached another first for a driver in F1 by recording his 200th podium in the sport. That has come from 345 races.

For the 12th time in 18 visits to the Hungaroring, Lewis brought home a trophy for his collection.

That is now five podiums in a row for the team since Monaco, highlighting the gains in performance the team has brought to W15 in the past two months.

60% of our overall Constructors’ points have now been scored in that time, as we look to continue closing the gap to the trio ahead.

Six Centuries Not Out for MB!

It was not just Lewis who achieved a podium milestone in Hungary.

The podium lockout for Mercedes-Benz on Sunday made it the 600th, 601st, and 602nd for the marque in F1.

From Juan Manuel Fangio in 1954, to Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, and Lewis on Sunday, some of the best drivers in the history of the sport have reached the rostrum with the three-pointed star beneath them.

McLaren, Williams, Force India, Racing Point, Lotus, Aston Martin, and Brawn have all played their part, too.

Mercedes becomes the second engine manufacturer in the history of F1 to amass 600 podiums, after Ferrari.

Another GR Hungary Fightback

After scoring his maiden pole at the track two years ago, George has found himself bumped out in Q1 in the past two seasons.

On both occasions, he has responded brilliantly, using strategy to full effect at a track notoriously difficult to overtake on. Last year’s P18 start became P6 and the flag. This season, P17 became P8.

Add a fastest lap to that – the 100th for the team since returning to F1 in 2010 – and George too can head to Belgium with a sense of momentum. Every point counts.

Kimi Doubles Up

Winning in F2 was so nice, Kimi had to do it twice!

Junior driver Kimi Antonelli claimed his second Formula 2 win of the season in Budapest, finishing 12 seconds clear of the field in his PREMA car.

The victory was the 17-year-old’s first Feature Race win in the series after his Sprint Race success at Silverstone two weeks ago, and saw him become just the third repeat winner in a season that has seen 14 different victors so far in 2024.

At 17 years, 10 months, and 25 days old, Kimi becomes the youngest double winner in the history of Formula 2.
