Lewis and George Aiming to Be 'In the Fight' at Belgian GP

There will be an end of term atmosphere at this weekend's Belgium Grand Prix - the final race before the 2024 F1 summer break.

That last week of school feeling has left both Lewis and George reflecting on the progression and development the team has taken with W15 in the past five months.

The upturn in fortune - a consequence of the hard work of every single team member at Brackley and Brixworth - has been noticeable.

Heading to round eight in Canada in June, the team had score 96 points, and not stood on a Grand Prix podium in 2024.

Five races, two wins, five podiums, two poles and 145 points later, the team arrives at Spa-Francorchamps with plenty of momentum.

Both drivers are full of praise for those back at the factories for helping make that all happen.

Lewis said: "It has been amazing. We have gone through this difficult phase and have now built back up to be fighting for wins.

"We have come out with our heads held high. It is a great feeling, and I am proud of the work we are both doing with the team.

"I am really excited for the next few months."

We feel we are on an exciting journey, and we want to finish on a high

George

George added: "We have questioned if we are ever going to be rewarded for any of this hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that the whole team is putting.

"The fact we have two wins to our name is a huge achievement for the team - especially from where we started in Bahrain.

"We feel we are on an exciting journey, and we want to finish on a high. We know we are on the right track and are excited for what is to come."

It has truly been a collective effort to bring W15 into contention in recent races, and both drivers have played a key role in making sure that could happen.

Lewis said: "You have to keep exploring and keep trying. You must understand that it will not always be bad, and that communication with the team is important.

"We needed to be as clear and detailed as possible. It is about making sure everyone is aligned. You want to feel as though everyone is with you on the same journey.

"That is what we have done and that makes it so much more of a joy."

There are many differences between the Hungaroring last week and Spa-Francorchamps this, most notably the weather.

After finding the rising mercury in Budapest trickier to handle, the team is hoping the cooler conditions of Belgium will help make W15 competitive.

George said: "Budapest confirmed what we knew already; we perform better in cooler conditions than in the heat.

"There is rain forecast this weekend, and we have brought some upgrades. Hopefully, we can take the next steps after the progress made in Canada.

"We want to take the fight to McLaren and Red Bull. F1 is about being in the fight and it would be great to be back there this weekend."

A podium for Lewis at Spa would be his 201st in F1, after becoming the first driver to reach two centuries last Sunday.

The seven-time champion is as eager as ever for more.

"When I look back at the pictures of all the podiums, it always brings me back to all the people who have been part of the journey, including from the two great teams I have got to work with so far," Lewis said.

"I still feel great. I am energised and driven to work with this team. I am excited to get on track this weekend."
