What is the New Technology?
Solid-state batteries are considered to be the next step in electric mobility, thanks to their use of solid electrolyte instead of the liquid variety.
This increases cell safety and allows for the use of new anodes such as lithium metal, which outperforms conventional lithium-ion cells.
The new technology is expected to increase driving range, by increasing the amount of energy stored in a battery cell per unit mass.
In short, solid-state batteries will reduce the weight of the component, while also improving safety.
How Does it Work?
The prototype solid-state battery was a collaboration between Mercedes-AMG HPP, Mercedes-Benz Center of Competence for Battery Systems and Factorial, a US company at the cutting edge of solid-state battery technology.
When the battery charges, the materials expand. When it discharges, the materials contract. The volume change in solid-state cells refers to this expansion and contraction of the materials inside the battery during charging and discharging.
The Mercedes Benz solid-state battery is equipped with pneumatic actuators that interact with the cell volume change during charging and discharging, which affects the battery's performance and lifespan.
Lab tests were conducted on a Mercedes EQS with the new battery at the end of 2024, with on-road tests starting in February of 2025.
Leading the Way
“Developing an automotive-scale solid-state battery underlines our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG.
“We’re therefore excited to announce that we’ve started road testing with a prototype vehicle equipped with this advanced technology. We will gain crucial insights into possible series integration of this cutting-edge battery technology.”
Siyu Huang, CEO and Co-Founder of Factorial Energy added: “Our collaboration with Mercedes-Benz proves that the future of electric vehicles is not just a vision, but a reality we're delivering today.”
“This breakthrough set a new benchmark for the entire automotive industry.”
