Miami GP: Exciting F1 Sprint Goes Unrewarded

Sprint premiere in Miami delivers thrilling fights: George and Lewis finish the sprint race in 12th and 16th place respectively

After a difficult Sprint Qualifying session on Friday afternoon, George and Lewis started the second F1 Sprint of the season from 11th and 12th positions on used Medium tyres.

Lewis got off to a good start and got on the inside into Turn 1. With him, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and Lando Norris, four drivers entered the corner at the same time. Alonso and Stroll touched first, then Alonso and Lewis. Stroll then sent Norris into a spin.

The McLaren driver came to a halt in the run-off zone and retired. The safety car was sent out onto the track. Race control reported that no further investigation into the incident was necessary.

After the restart, Lewis and George were in P9 and P14, with George stuck in a DRS train led by Pierre Gasly and unfortunately unable to overtake the cars in front of him. The team already knew beforehand that it had a straight line disadvantage due to our set-up.

That made both Lewis' and George’s races difficult. Whilst they had the pace on those ahead, the straight line speed limitation made it tough to overtake.

Lewis, meanwhile, was battling with Kevin Magnussen for P8. The Haas driver pushed him off the track several times, for which he received two 10-second time penalties. During one of the manoeuvres, Tsunoda was able to slip through and secure P8 ahead of Lewis.

On the final lap, Lewis managed to overtake Tsunoda and secure the final points position. But the joy was short-lived. Lewis received a drive-through penalty, which was converted into a 20-second time penalty at the end of the race. As a result, he lost the point and dropped back to P16. George moved up to P12 as a result of the penalties for Lewis and Magnussen.

The team now turns its attention to qualifying and any lessons it can learn from the Sprint for potential setup changes for qualifying and the Grand Prix on Sunday.

The action continues at 16:00 local time (21:00 UK time) with qualifying, in which the grid positions for Sunday's Miami Grand Prix will be decided.
