The 37th America's Cup:
Everything You Need To Know

It's not every day you get to compete for the oldest trophy in professional sport. It's not every day you get a chance to create history for your country.

The INEOS Britannia sailing team can do both this month, as they prepare to take on New Zealand in the 37th America's Cup.

Skippered by Sir Ben Ainslie, 'Britannia' and its crew will have the chance to become the first British-based team to win the trophy in the event's history.

They are already in somewhat unchartered waters, having become the first team from these shores to reach the final in 60 years.

What is the America's Cup?

First held in 1851 as the 'R.Y.S £100 Cup' by the British Royal Yacht Squadron, the America's Cup is the oldest international sporting competition still in operation.

The first race took place around the Isle of Wight and was won by a schooner yacht called America.

In 1857, the competition was officially renamed after the winning vessel from that inaugural event - and the America's Cup was born.

The rules of the competition state that the racing must take place in summer months to allow for the best possible conditions.

In the northern hemisphere this is between May and October. In the southern hemisphere, this is between November and April.

How does the America's Cup Work?

INEOS Britannia will take on defending champions Team New Zealand in a best-of-13 (first to seven) race series to decide who wins the 2024 America's Cup.

The two crews of eight will face off twice a day over six days, with a deciding match if needed on the seventh day.

Good luck from the Team!

The 2024 story will end in Barcelona, but the first chapters were written at our F1 factory in Brackley.

In conjunction with INEOS Sport, our own Applied Science division has been heavily involved in the project from day one, helping in the design and build of Britannia.

Toto, who saw first-hand the hard work and dedication going into the event back in Barcelona in May , said: "What a journey it has been so far. Since 2019, INEOS Britannia have worked hand-in-hand with our Applied Science division with one aim: win the America's Cup.

"It has been a road filled with challenges and hurdles to overcome, as you would expect when competing in the oldest international sporting competition and one that is so fiercely fought for," Toto said.

"That INEOS Britannia have seen off many incredible challengers to this point is testament to the strength of the partnership between the team and Applied Science.

"As they get ready to take on Emirates Team New Zealand and battle it out for the America's Cup, everyone at Mercedes F1 wishes Jim, Ben, and the whole team the very best of luck."

Route to the Final

With four years to design, manufacture, development and test, the entire America's Cup competition is a true test of the world's best sailing vessels.

The event began back in August, with the Preliminary Regatta for the six teams in this year's event.

Each team competed against each other once over three days, with the top two teams then facing off in a final to decide the winner of the event.

Two wins and three defeats saw INEOS finish the group stage in fourth position.

Next up was the Louis Vuitton Cup, a multi-stage series of races to determine the Challenger, who would face defending champions New Zealand in the final.

Competition rules dictate that the defending champions automatically advance to the America's Cup.

Having advanced through the round robin stage as the top seeds and then a semi-final against the Swiss entry Alinghi Red Bull Racing, skipper Ainslie and his crew faced off against the Italian team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the final in a first-to-seven-point series, claiming a 7-4 victory to secure a place against New Zealand.

Having first set sail on August 22, the team rolled back into port with champagne showers over 40 days later, celebrating an historic final berth.
