The Japanese Grand Prix is known for being home to some of the most creative and passionate motorsport fans in the world. The circuit itself, Suzuka, is also a favourite with the drivers, with most of them describing it as their favourite track we visit.

But it was one fan and his son in particular who stole the hearts of thousands in 2024, including our very own George Russell. Twelve month on, we caught up with Naija to get his take on why his family thinks the Japanese Grand Prix is the best on the F1 calendar.

Naija has always loved cars, but after watching Netflix's Drive to Survive he quickly became obsessed with Formula 1.

"There are many reasons why F1 is so fascinating, but for me, it's the "human" aspect that captivates me," he explains.

"These machines are the result of the tireless efforts of the world's top engineers and technicians.

"The fierce battles among the 20 elite drivers, who have been selected from around the world to make their mark in history, and the passionate fans who cheer them on globally—all these human elements come together to create incredible drama."

Incredible First Impressions

In 2023 Naija and his son - who is affectionately known as 'Mini George' - travelled to Suzuka for their first Japanese Grand Prix.

"I still vividly remember the sheer size and speed of the F1 cars, the deafening roar of the engines, the scent of burning tyres, and the electrifying enthusiasm of the fans," Naija recalls.

"One of the most unforgettable moments was during the pit walk event when Mercedes invited us right in front of their garage, and we got to take a photo with their car. As we fell in love with F1, our family also became big fans of the team, and especially George.

"On that day, we all wore Mercedes team gear, and the team noticed us, giving us this amazing opportunity.

"Even now, through social media, they occasionally check in on our son, and their dedication to their fans continues to impress and move us."

When 'Mini George' Met 'Big George'

One of the standout moments from last year's Japanese Grand Prix was the moment our George met one of his youngest fans 'Mini George' on the fan stage, with the two recreating the iconic T-pose in front of thousands of fans.

"That was one of the most incredible moments of our lives," Naija states.

"On Saturday, we woke up early to line-up for the driver stage in the evening. Thanks to our efforts, we secured front-row seats.

"When George and Lewis finally appeared the atmosphere exploded with excitement and we were shouting our hearts out, especially our son who idolises George and was screaming his name with all his might."

Both drivers spotted 'Mini George' and the family's custom Mercedes merch, designed by Naija, in the crowd and invited them on stage.

"I was so overwhelmed with excitement that I thought my heart would explode. Once we were on stage, they welcomed us warmly. George first shook my hand firmly and high-fived my son before doing his signature 'T-pose' together with him!

"Watching my son interact with his hero up close was so emotional—I was struggling to hold back my tears."

The whole interaction was also captured by Lewis, who took the now treasured photo of the two.

"Since that day, my son has become even more obsessed with George. As you can see from my social media posts, he cheers for George at every race, sleeps with his George doll every night, and literally lives his days with George in his heart!"

'Incredible' Level of Creativity

Japanese fans are so creative when it comes to dressing for the race weekend. As well as rocking official team merchandise, they also love to make their own; from shirts, hats, and even replica race suits of their heroes.

"Although I only design my items, others go all out—some sew their own racing suits, others craft replica driver helmets, and some even build small DRS wings to attach to their helmets!

"The level of creativity is incredible, and just walking around and seeing everyone's custom gear is an experience in itself."

We can't wait to see what fans, including Naija, have dreamed up this week!

Watching My First Race Was 'Breathtaking'

Picking a spot to watch the racing action can be a big choice, but Naija and his family know exactly where they want to sit when at Suzuka.

"I love the seats near Turn One or ones close to the chicane before the final corner.

"When I first watched the race at the circuit, I sat near Turn 1, and witnessing 20 cars launching down the home straight at full throttle as the lights went out was absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend this spot to anyone attending Suzuka for the first time.

"The seats near the chicane allow you to watch the cars closely as they slow down, making it easier to observe their movements and enjoy the battles taking place in that section.

"Additionally, this spot provides a great overall view of the circuit, allowing you to track the cars for a longer duration without feeling like you're missing anything!"

Switching Seasons at Suzuka

Last season, the Formula 1 calendar had a reshuffle, moving the Japanese Grand Prix from its usual late-September or October slot to the stunning spring time. It is now held during the Sakura - or cherry blossom - season, with fans enjoying the slightly warmer weather this time of year!

"Some fans initially voiced concerns at the change in the schedule, because April is a busy time for schools and workplaces in Japan," said Naija.

"But the sight of F1 cars racing alongside the cherry blossoms was truly stunning!

"Compared to the September race, the weather was also much more comfortable, so personally, I was happy with the change! During the day, the weather is quite comfortable and you can wear short sleeves.

"However, it can get a bit chilly in the morning, evening, or when it rains, so don't forget to bring a light jacket!"
