Write, Said Fred: Season 2024, Episode Two

Hello everyone, Fred here!

It’s been a while since I checked in with you all, and what better time to do so than the summer shutdown?

Firstly, I think we can all agree how great it has been to see Lewis and George have the success they’ve had in the past couple of months. Every time I come to the factory, I can see how hard everyone is working and trying to improve.

We’ve all played our part in helping make those wins at Spielberg and Silverstone possible.

It has been so cool to be part of that journey helping the team back towards the front. I have tried to make the most of my role in the simulator to help the team predict how the car will react on track, trying to get the right correlation before Lewis and George come in.

Learning how to get the best out of that role is part of the reason I love being part of this team.

I’ve been on track myself as well.

The highlight was definitely my Le Mans 24 Hours debut. I watched the race on TV a few times as a kid, but I’d never been before. I could not believe how many Danes and Danish flags there were – the support was insane!

The race is a real challenge of staying right on the limit, but not pushing it too far. It is so easy to make a mistake when you are not getting much sleep, and the wet weather we had this year made that even harder.

But that is a learning. You have to recognise you will not jump into the car every time feeling at your best, but you know you still need to perform.

Picture the scene. It is 6am. You have had two hours sleep and you have a triple stint in front of you. It is tough, but that’s the fun part of the challenge Le Mans sets you.

I loved driving at night, you just have complete focus and tunnel vision. It is almost as if time goes quicker in the dark.

Two weeks later, I got my second taste of a 24-hour race in Spa. It was really cool to get behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for a race for the first time.

Both events have definitely helped me to become a more well-rounded driver and I am really happy about that.

From one motorsport event with a lot of heritage and history to another. I was delighted to get my first taste of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, spending four days with the team and W12 in the process.

I was so excited when I found out I would be doing Goodwood this year and it didn’t disappoint. As a lover of motorsport, it was so much fun meeting all the fans.

It was so much fun to see all those cars and feel all that power over the weekend. I came away feeling a bit dizzy from all the burnouts and donuts I had done!

I had such a great time. I hope I get the chance to come back and do it all again one day.

Now the engines have been switched off for the summer, it is time for everyone to take a well-earned break.

I will be spending my time in Greece and Denmark. I love Greece, it is my favourite place to go on holiday.

Denmark will be all about catching up with friends and family, something I’venot had a chance to do much of this year because of the busy schedule. Overall, it will be a pretty chilled summer break.

I hope yours is too, and I look forward to checking in again later in the season. Bye for now.

Fred.
