The Circuit

Under the floodlights of Singapore lies one of the most exciting circuits on the F1 calendar. It was host to the championship’s first night race back in 2008, and proved an instant hit. Since then, it has had several changes with the most recent tweaks occurring before last year’s event. Now measuring 4.94km, and consisting of 19 corners, the track is still one of the most demanding Lewis and George will face.

As well as the challenges that come with a street circuit, like close walls and bumpy track surfaces, Singapore also has the addition of the intense weather. Humidity is high, as are temperatures, despite us driving on the track late into the night when it’s cooler. It’s widely known that drivers can lose as much as three kilos of weight during this weekend because of the amount of sweating they experience, so preparing for these conditions are key. As well as the heat, we’ve seen huge downpours in the past, including in 2022 when the start of the Grand Prix was delayed because of the heavy rain.

For the circuit itself, George and Lewis will experience high levels of downforce and lots of heavy braking around the Marina Bay Street Circuit. It’s also anti-clockwise with plenty of slow corners, but can be tough on the rear tyres and cars are prone to overheating.

Everything You Need To Know: Singapore

It’s race week, and we’re back making memories under the floodlights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Officially Formula 1’s first ‘night race’, this special place is one of the most recognisable locations on the calendar and hosted its first event in 2008. We’ve won here as a constructor four times, with Lewis lifting the first place trophy on four occasions.

Singapore always provides a great race, and one of three rounds on the current calendar to feature a Safety Car at every appearance, with the other being Jeddah and the newly added Las Vegas. There have been a handful of changes to the circuit configuration over the years, including last time out with the circuit now measuring 4.94km and including 19 turns. Lewis holds the lap record here from our time to Singapore in 2023, with a rapid time of 1m35.867s.

As well as the fastest lap last year, we also picked up a podium spot when Lewis finished in third. We’ve got seven pieces of silverware from our time here, and have helped power five victories as a supplier – the most of anyone on the grid.

Although we race at night, the temperatures and humidity are a huge factor over the weekend and are very physically demanding. Drivers will lose a lot of weight when in the car, and you should expect to see lots of cooling methods across the weekend; from ice baths, cooling vests and dry ice!

F1 Academy is also back, and Doriane Pin will be back in her Mercedes colours to fight for the championship crown as she sits second in the Drivers’ standings.

Our Successes

The first win we experienced in Singapore came in 2014. Lewis started on pole, and converted that into the victory – his seventh of that season. He led the pack away perfectly, and was able to make moves to retake positions after his pit stops to reach the chequered flag in first.

Our next trip to the top step of the podium in Singapore came two years later thanks to Nico Rosberg. It was his 200th race start in Formula 1, and he won the race in style with pole position followed by the victory. Lewis also collected some silverware when he joined Nico on the podium in third.

We managed consecutive wins in 2017, with Lewis winning a chaotic Singapore Grand Prix. Having started in fifth, Lewis managed to avoid the drama up ahead as several cars came together in the wet track conditions, and emerged in the lead after just four corners. From there, he knuckled down and kept composed, even locking in the fastest lap of the race which was a record at the time, to win his third race around Marina Bay. Team-mate Valtteri Bottas also finished in the top three, for a double-podium result.

In 2018, Lewis delivered what some label as ‘one of the greatest pole laps of all time’. From there he converted the first place grid slot into another victory, as we both managed the race perfectly to secure win number 83 for the Silver Arrows.

Last season, George looked on course for the win but a last lap misjudgement took him out of the running. However, Lewis was promoted up to third place and also secured the fastest lap of the newly changed track layout.
